Ray was a San Franciscobased fine artist who worked in a wide range of media, including painting, collage, print works, and photography. Abstract and handcrafted, with a retro-futuristic feel, Rays work is always identifiable, whether seen on museum or gallery walls, in hip restaurants and boutique hotelsor on home decor products, CD covers, or rock posters.Rex Ray (American, 19562015) combined a midcentury modern aesthetic with a psychedelic color palette and amorphous shapes to create a pop style all his own. Born in Germany and raised in Colorado, Ray moved to San Francisco in the early 1980s, where he joined the Bay Areas art, literary, and activist scenes. His bold style lent itself to fine art and commercial workfrom album covers and concert posters to book jackets, murals, canvases, digital compositions, and resin boards. He created his collages entirely by hand and is known for popularizing the use of high-gloss resin panelsencasing his colorful, graphic collage designs in a glossy layer of resin. Rays work has been showcased in several books and is in major museum collections.
